Wheel alignment, sometimes referred to as tracking consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are set to the car maker’s specification. The purpose of these adjustments is to reduce tyre wear, and to ensure that vehicle travel is straight and true.
All new vehicles leave the factory with their alignment checked and adjusted. Once the vehicle’s tracking has been set and the suspension has settled, the wheel alignment will not alter.
The main reason to have your tracking checked and possibly adjusted will be if the track rod end has been replaced, alternatively should the vehicle been involved in any collision with for instance a kerb, then there is a possibility that the steering arm may have been damaged or bent slightly. By adjusting the tracking we can reset the wheel alignment and take out any intolerance.
The most common misconception with tracking or wheel alignment is that due uneven tyre wear, specifically around the inner or outer edges of tyres will mean that your vehicle tracking is out. This is incorrect, the most common reason for uneven tyre wear is under inflation of the tyres and overuse of power steering. (see the disadvantages in our power steering section)
The answer is generally, probably not. If you know the history of your vehicle and you know that no damage has occurred throughout its life then it is unlikely to need the tracking adjusted.
Unfortunately the problem with tracking is that you may not notice these defects until after a few months of usage or after running some distance.
