Are your car’s power steering reservoir pipes leaking? Is the steering column or pump noisy? Pentagon Motorist Centre in Chatham Medway can repair or replace any power steering components.
Power Assisted Steering (PAS) is generally known as power steering helps drivers steer by reducing steering effort of the steering wheel. Hydraulic or electric actuators add controlled energy to the steering mechanism, so the driver needs to provide only a small amount of effort regardless of conditions.
Although it is not advisable to do so power steering helps considerably when a vehicle is stopped or moving slowly. The danger is that this tends to wear out the edges of tyres quicker and combined with under inflation this can shorten the life of a tyre considerably.
Quite often power steering is run with the help of an actuating pump which is commonly driven by the auxiliary drive belt off of the engine. Should the steering become noisy or screeches it could be the belt slipping because it has worn out or it may be that the pump or pipe work from the oil reservoir may have a leak.
An oil leak from the reservoir can quite often contaminate the belt causing it to slip. Should a belt slip apart from screeching it may cause the steering to become stiff?
Should a belt slip or completely fail and needs to be replaced the vehicle is still able to be steered although it will feel extremely hard because you will be using manual effort alone.
Electric power assisted steering (EPS/EPAS) or motor driven power steering (MDPS) uses an electric motor to assist the driver of a vehicle. Sensors detect the position and torque of the steering column, and a computer module applies assistive torque via the motor, which connects to either the steering gear or steering column.
This allows varying amounts of assistance to be applied depending on driving conditions. Engineers can therefore tailor steering-gear response to variable-rate and variable-damping suspension systems, optimizing ride, handling, and steering for each vehicle.
Some vehicle manufacturers like Fiat have designed a system that can regulate the amount of assistance by using a button named “CITY” This system allows the vehicle to switch between two different assist curves, while most other EPS systems have variable assist. These give more assistance as the vehicle slows down, and less at faster speeds.
