Because there is not enough fuel being injected then the engine may begin to give a poor performance and in extreme cases may begin to hesitate.
Modern exhaust systems are monitored via an oxygen sensor or lambda sensor which sends information to the ECU. A lambda sensor is normally screwed into the cat, downpipe or manifold. The ECU collects the information and adjusts the quantity of fuel being injected into the combustion chamber. This helps the system to maintain maximum efficiency.
A faulty blowing exhaust can also affect an emissions reading. To carry out an emissions test the gas analyser probe is inserted into the tailpipe of the vehicle’s exhaust so that it can measure the engine’s exhaust unburnt gases. If your vehicle’s exhaust is blowing and allowing the gases to escape before they get to the rear of the vehicle then a false reading may result in an emissions failure.
