A turbocharger, or turbo is a turbine-driven forced induction device that increases an engine’s efficiency and power by forcing extra air into the combustion chamber. It improves output because the turbine can force more air, and proportionately more fuel, into the combustion chamber than a normal aspirated engine.
In normal piston engines, intake gases are “pushed” into the engine by atmospheric pressure filling the volumetric void (vacuum) caused by the downward stroke of the piston.

A squeal is literally the vanes spinning at more than 4,000 rpm and contacting the turbo casing.

A wastegate is a valve that diverts exhaust gases away from the turbine wheel in a turbocharged engine system. The primary function of the wastegate is to regulate the maximum boost pressure in turbocharger systems, to protect the engine and the turbocharger.
The best way to help prevent your turbo from wearing is firstly to allow your engine to warm up fully before overexerting it. The Turbo is lubricated by oil feed pipes and when the engine is cold oil is thicker and the lubrication process is not as efficient compared with when the engine is warm. Allowing the engine to warm up naturally will help the life span of a turbo, as will regular oil changes and using oil flushing additives to keep the oil ways clear.
