A serpentine belt, also known as a multi-vee, poly-v, or multi-rib belt, is more commonly known as a fan belt or an auxiliary drive belt. It is a single, continuous belt used to drive multiple peripheral devices fitted on an engine. The devices that are driven by a serpentine belt are items like an alternator, power steering pump, water pump, air conditioning compressor, etc. The belt may also be guided by an idler pulley or a belt tensioner which may be spring-loaded, hydraulic, or manual.
An auxiliary drive belt is more efficient than the older multiple belt system and may use less space in the engine compartment. The belt may be put under increased tension without stretching this reduces slip, which can increase the fan belts life and mechanical efficiency.
