Spark Plugs

Does your engine have a misfire or have a running problem, is there a juddering fault?

This could be a weak, damaged or worn out spark plug causing loss of power.

What is a spark plug?

A spark plug is a device for delivering electric current from an ignition system to the combustion chamber of a Spark Ignition (SI) engine to ignite the compressed fuel/air mixture by using an electric spark that is generated by an ignition coil.

The spark plugs are screwed into the engine’s cylinder head and are thus electrically grounded. The central electrode protrudes through its porcelain insulator into the combustion chamber.┬áThe central electrode, which may contain a resistor and is connected by a heavily insulated wire known as a HT lead to an ignition coil.

Spark plugs like many engine components, wear out over time. Pentagon Motorist Centre’s technicians can diagnose a misfire problem and replace what is necessary. The workshop is open from 8:30 – 5:30 during the week and it is close to both Rochester and Gillingham in central Chatham, Medway.

Long Life Plugs:

The development of high temperature electrodes using metals such as yttrium, iridium, tungsten or palladium, as well as the relatively high value platinum, silver or gold allows the use of a smaller centre wire.

These particular spark plugs have sharper edges but will not melt or corrode away. These materials are used because of their high melting points and durability, not because of their electrical conductivity. The down side is that they are extremely expensive to purchase but they can last from between 60,000 to 100,000 depending on the manufacturers own recommended replacement terms.
